Oppressing minorities is a reality as old as time. Humans are as good at conflict as they are at cooperation, and minorities, whether religious, gender-based, or otherwise, have been at the receiving end of that far too often. Recently, technology has joined this oppression, whether that be by perpetuating racism in artificial intelligence or using news cycles to villainize certain groups. One of the most pressing facets of this issue is surveillance technology. The human right to privacy has never been harder to uphold, and body will discuss the affects of this on minority populations.
Dear Delegates,
It is my honour and privilege to welcome you to the United Nations Human Rights Council, the body responsible for promoting and protecting human rights around the world. As some of the oldest delegates in IISP MUN 2022, discussing one of the most pressing issues of the 21st century, it is important that you keep an open mind and keep on your toes.
Since, for most of you, this is your first MUN, I’d like to offer some advice – what you do on the days of the MUN aren’t as important as how you prepare for them. Although it is my hope that this Background Guide serves you well in understanding all the angles of the agenda, it is only a jumping point to all the research you should do. Read voraciously and try to understand as much as you can – your country, the agenda, and every relationship between the two of those things. Not only that, but make a note of all the information you learn in a document or a notebook, so you can access it easily during the MUN.
This will allow you to be confident and well-researched, which will make it easier for you to make impactful speeches, effective alliances, and strong resolutions. A good delegate is only as good as their preparation, as it is in all other areas of life.
I look forward to seeing all of you at the MUN, and wish you all the best!
Best Regards,
Abiya Syed,
Head of Substantive
