Comprised of 12 nations and 3 territories, South America saw massive growth and development from 2003 to 2012. However, rising prices and much of its youth population relocating caused this to slow down. Then, in 2020, the continent was severely hit by the COVID-19 pandemic, stagnating its development further. Latin America and the Caribbean has massive potential—not only do they have enormous natural capital, they have among the easiest access to renewable energy and sustainable systems. This body will look at the scope for development and growth in South America and figure out how to make it a reality.
Dear Delegates,
It is my honour and privilege to welcome you to the United Nations General Assembly, one of the six principal organs of the United Nations. As the youngest delegates of the IISP MUN 2022, I am so proud of the initiative you have taken in participating in this event, and promise that it will be a unique and exciting experience that will enable you to familiarize yourself with world issues, overcome your fears of public speaking, and enhance your leadership skills.
Since, for most of you, this is your first MUN, I’d like to offer some advice – what you do on the days of the MUN aren’t as important as how you prepare for them. Although it is my hope that this Background Guide serves you well in understanding all the angles of the agenda, it is only a jumping point to all the research you should do. Read voraciously and try to understand as much as you can – your country, the agenda, and every relationship between the two of those things. Not only that, but make a note of all the information you learn in a document or a notebook, so you can access it easily during the MUN.
This will allow you to be confident and well-researched, which will make it easier for you to make impactful speeches, effective alliances, and strong resolutions. A good delegate is only as good as their preparation, as it is in every other area of life. I look forward to seeing all of you at the MUN, and wish you all the best!
Best Regards,
Abiya Syed
