United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change

Grades 6-7 Beginner Committee
Recreating COP26

The Conference of the Parties (COP) is an annual event where the governments in the UNFCCC discuss the implications of climate change in order to find solutions on its prevention. In 2021, COP26 was hosted by the UK in partnership with Italy, and was a milestone event for the future of climate action because of the sheer scale of participation and coverage. To limit global warming to 1.5 degrees, global emissions need to halve by 2030 and reach net zero by 2050, which requires drastic and ambitious action. IISP MUN intends to recreate COP26 to analyse the careful balance between self-preservation of countries and the responsibility they have towards the planet, and what the implications of their choices are on the future.

Letter from Secretariat

Dear Delegates,

It is my honour and privilege to welcome you to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, the body responsible for stabilizing the effects of climate change through diplomacy. As some of the youngest delegates of the IISP MUN 2022, I am so proud of the initiative you have taken in participating in this event, and promise that it will be a unique and exciting experience that will enable you to familiarize yourself with world issues, overcome your fears of public speaking, and enhance your leadership skills.

Since, for most of you, this is your first MUN, I’d like to offer some advice – what you do on the days of the MUN aren’t as important as how you prepare for them. Although it is my hope that this Background Guide serves you well in understanding all the angles of the agenda, it is only a jumping point to all the research you should do. Read voraciously and try to understand as much as you can – your country, the agenda, and every relationship between the two of those things. Not only that, but make a note of all the information you learn in a document or a notebook, so you can access it easily during the MUN.

This will allow you to be confident and well-researched, which will make it easier for you to make impactful speeches, effective alliances, and strong resolutions. A good delegate is only as good as their preparation, as it is in every other area of life.
I look forward to seeing all of you at the MUN, and wish you all the best!

Best Regards,
Abiya Syed
