IISP MUN Committees

To achieve the UN's goals in a more streamlined fashion, the organization created several committees with varied powers and responsibilities.  At the IISP MUN, we will simulate them to better understand world issues through different lenses. Here are the 6 committees chosen for this edition of the Model United Nations that delegates will participate in:

United Nations Security Council

The implications of the Russo-Ukraine War for Europe

The Russo-Ukraine War has rippled all around the world, with effects on global supply-chains touching every industry, including corn, petroleum, fertilizer, cooking oil, natural gas, and assorted grain, among many others. Although nations around the world have and will suffer due to this conflict, some of the most heavily affected countries are those in Europe, whether that be because of the refugee crisis or the effects of the economic sanctions. This body will analyse the threats and opportunities of this conflict, keeping in mind humanitarian repercussions, and assess the effects of the Russo-Ukraine War on European powers.

The Privatisation of War

Since the Cold War, the private military sector has proliferated considerably, earning billions in profits annually. With this, and the subsequent reduction of American and Soviet forces, thousands of trained soldiers were left with no source of livelihood, and a lack of training in other skills, forcing them to resort to working with private military firms. The impacts of private military range from mild to catastrophic, and this body will discuss these impacts, and how the more harmful of them can be mitigated.

Environmental sustainability as a path to economic stability

Environmental sustainability and economic stability are often seen as opposite choices. Economic stability means a lack of fluctuations in a country’s economy and stable inflation, and many say it cannot occur if environmental sustainability is prioritized because it is more inconvenient and expensive. For example, shifting all cars to electric is not only extremely difficult, creating the infrastructure to charge them would take a lot of money and resources. This body aims to find ways that environmental sustainability and economic stability can go hand-in-hand, rather than being mutually exclusive paths.

Recreating COP26

The Conference of the Parties (COP) is an annual event where the governments in the UNFCCC discuss the implications of climate change in order to find solutions on its prevention. In 2021, COP26 was hosted by the UK in partnership with Italy, and was a milestone event for the future of climate action because of the sheer scale of participation and coverage. To limit global warming to 1.5 degrees, global emissions need to halve by 2030 and reach net zero by 2050, which requires drastic and ambitious action. IISP MUN intends to recreate COP26 to analyse the careful balance between self-preservation of countries and the responsibility they have towards the planet, and what the implications of their choices are on the future.

The use of mass surveillance to oppress minorities

Oppressing minorities is a reality as old as time. Humans are as good at conflict as they are at cooperation, and minorities, whether religious, gender-based, or otherwise, have been at the receiving end of that far too often. Recently, technology has joined this oppression, whether that be by perpetuating racism in artificial intelligence or using news cycles to villainize certain groups. One of the most pressing facets of this issue is surveillance technology. The human right to privacy has never been harder to uphold, and body will discuss the affects of this on minority populations.

The Scope for Sustainable Development & Growth in South America

Comprised of 12 nations and 3 territories, South America saw massive growth and development from 2003 to 2012. However, rising prices and much of its youth population relocating caused this to slow down. Then, in 2020, the continent was severely hit by the COVID-19 pandemic, stagnating its development further. Latin America and the Caribbean has massive potential—not only do they have enormous natural capital, they have among the easiest access to renewable energy and sustainable systems. This body will look at the scope for development and growth in South America and figure out how to make it a reality.
